Cardboard, duct tape, and a whole lot of community spirit came together on McGee Creek State Park Saturday for the inaugural 'Redneck Regatta,' a cardboard boat race that drew an impressive crowd and more than two dozen creative contestants.

Hosted by The Dam Store, the event surpassed its organizers’ expectations. 'Our expectations were we hoped to have maybe between 5 to 10 boats. I think we'll probably have around 25,' said Melissa Deupree, co-owner of The Dam Store. 'We've had amazing support from the community… People are just looking for something fun to do, and we’ve seen families come together to build, making memories.'

The idea for the unique race came from Deupree’s broth- er and fellow store owner, Charlie, who sent her a video of a similar event about two months ago. 'He said, we should do this, and then we just ran with it,' she explained. 'It seemed fun.'
