Atoka County volunteer firefighters were kept in high demand this past weekend as dry conditions contributed to a surge in emergency runs across the area.
According to data released by Atoka County Emergency Management Director Derrick Mixon, local departments responded to a total of 77 fire-related calls between Friday, Feb. 27, and Sunday, March 1. The vast majority of these incidents involved grass fires, with crews battling 31 separate blazes over the three-day period.
In addition to the wildland fires, volunteers responded to two structure fires and one vehicle fire. The weekend also saw 43 controlled burns reported to the E911 center.
