Public privacy concerns surrounding automated license plate readers dominated discussion at Monday’s Atoka County Board of Commissioners meeting, as Sheriff Kody Simpson addressed local citizens regarding the department’s FLOCK camera network and announced plans to step away from the system.
Addressing questions about data access and recording capabilities, Simpson clarified that the cameras are strictly utilized for active law enforcement functions.
'There is a major misconception as to who and what we're using them for,' Simpson said. 'It's for law enforcement agencies only for the purpose of law enforcement tasks... NCIC alerts, Amber alerts, as well as investigative searches, something that has to have a crime tied to it. Beyond that, there is no access.'
