Oklahoma’s summer has been back in full force. Much of the state has seen daily temperatures above 100 degrees, with nighttime lows hovering around 80. In addition to the dangerous heat, drought conditions are widespread. Warm, dry weather exposes Oklahomans to one of the state’s biggest hazards: wildfires. Here’s how to help prevent wildfires and protect your home.
First, consider the current conditions. The entirety of Oklahoma is experiencing dry weather, and almost two-thirds of the state faces severe to exceptional drought, with the driest conditions in western Oklahoma. Forecasts show little relief in sight for the next several weeks. These factors create ideal conditions for wildfires, and any fire that starts can intensify quickly. For example, the March 2025 wildfire outbreak alone scorched over 170,000 acres, resulting in over 500 homes and businesses destroyed, over 200 injuries and tragically, four fatalities.
