Facing the top-ranked squad in Class 2A, the Atoka Wampus Cats showed remarkable resolve on their home turf Friday night, putting together sustained drives and breaking through a formidable defense in a 48-14 clash against the Holdenville Wolverines.
Holdenville brought a potent, run-heavy offense to town, relying on quick misdirection, sweeps, and counters. The Wolverines established an early rhythm on their opening drive with a touchdown and two-point conversion, adding two more first-quarter scores to build a 24-0 lead.
Despite the deficit, Atoka’s offense refused to back down, stringing together effective plays against a Wolverine defense that had allowed very few points all season. Quarterback Ryan Barton anchored the unit with composed decision-making, taking what the defense gave him, escaping pressure when needed, and avoiding forced throws.
