An Atoka County man faces felony harboring charges after state troopers and sheriff’s deputies responded to a burn ban violation late last month that sparked a search for a wanted fugitive.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Sonny Scott arrested Scott Wayne Pittman, 49, on Sept. 26 near an Atoka County residence on initial counts of harboring a fugitive and obstruction. Charges of felony harboring a fugitive from justice were subsequently filed against Pittman, along with a co-resident, Brenda Lea Reynolds, 68.
The incident began when Trooper Scott responded to assist the Atoka County Sheriff’s Office with a reported burn ban violation involving a suspect with an active felony warrant. Upon arriving at the scene, Trooper Scott observed three active burn piles in the front yard of the property and used his vehicle’s public address system to request the occupants step outside.
