A woman was detained near Love's Travel Plaza on South Mississippi Monday afternoon following a report of shoplifting at the nearby Walmart. While the store did not pursue theft charges, the woman was ultimately arrested for public intoxication.
According to a report by Atoka Police Officer Zachary Rice, he was dispatched to Walmart around 1:58 PM regarding a female shoplifter, identified as Carol Craver, who had reportedly left the store and was walking north behind Love's Travel Plaza. The initial description indicated she was wearing gray sweatpants.
Officer Rice located a woman matching the description behind Frost Ranch Wear. The woman, later confirmed to be Carol Craver, was wearing a yellow shirt and gray sweatpants and carrying Walmart bags.
Upon making contact, Officer Rice reported that Craver immediately began speaking unintelligibly with very slurred speech and constricted pupils. This continued for approximately five minutes.
Officer Rice informed Craver about the alleged theft report from Walmart. Craver reportedly continued her unintelligible speech throughout the encounter.
Due to her erratic behavior and speech, Officer Rice made the decision to detain Craver and placed her in the back of his patrol unit, along with her belongings. He then transported her to Walmart to meet with Lieutenant Jimmy Taylor and Loss Prevention agent Latrisha Workman.
At Walmart, the loss prevention agent stated that the store would not be pursuing charges as the value of the allegedly stolen property did not meet their minimum requirement.
While Craver admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, officers believed she was under the influence of another intoxicant as well, based on her actions and speech.
Carol Craver was formally arrested for Public Intoxication and transported to the Atoka County Jail, where she was booked without incident.
