Obstructed View Leads to DUI, Open Container Arrest

An Atoka Police Department officer arrested a man on Sunday for driving under the influence, operating a vehicle without a license, and other related charges, following a traffic stop for an obstructed view.

On May 25, 2025, at approximately 2:20 PM, Officer Christian Shomo was traveling northbound on Highway 69 when he observed a red Honda Civic with objects hanging from its rearview mirror, which appeared to obstruct the driver's view.

Officer Shomo initiated a traffic stop near Vinita Allan on Highway 69 and made contact with the driver, identified as Selvin Lara. When asked for his driver's license, Lara presented a passport and stated he did not have a driver's license. He also informed the officer he did not have insurance on the vehicle, which he claimed to have purchased two days prior.

A check of the NCIC database confirmed that Lara had never possessed a valid driver's license. Upon returning to the vehicle and asking Lara to exit, Officer Shomo detected an odor of alcohol emanating from Lara's person.

Lara admitted to drinking the night prior and agreed to a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT), which registered a BrAC of 0.06. Officer Shomo then conducted a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, observing six out of six clues indicating impairment. Due to a language barrier, further standardized field sobriety tests were not administered.

Lara was then placed under arrest. An inventory search of the vehicle revealed two empty Corona Extra bottles in the center console and a six-pack of Corona Extra, partially covered by clothing, in the front passenger seat. The unopened bottles were reportedly cold to the touch.

After being read the State's Implied Consent Test statement, Lara agreed to a breath test. He was transported to the Atoka County Jail, where the Intoxilyzer 8000 registered a BrAC of 0.06.

Selvin Lara was booked into the Atoka County Jail on charges of Driving While Impaired, No Valid Driver's License, Transporting an Open Container, and No Insurance.
