A routine traffic stop for a missing license plate and seat belt violation in Atoka on Friday afternoon escalated into drug charges and an additional charge of introducing contraband into a penal institution for a local man.
At approximately 4:43 PM on June 6, 2025, Sgt. Cody Poe of the Atoka Police Department was on patrol near the intersection of California Avenue and West 3rd Street when he observed a black truck traveling without a visible rear license plate. The officer also noticed the male driver was not wearing a properly fastened seat belt, and the driver's side windshield was broken.
Sgt. Poe initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Jaystin Perry. Perry stated he did not have his driver's license or proof of insurance with him. Sgt. Poe recognized Perry from a previous encounter and confirmed that Perry's license was still suspended and that the truck was uninsured. Perry explained the license plate was in the back seat and that he had forgotten to fasten his seat belt.
