The Legend of Atoka and the Impact He Had on Us All
William 'Pat' Patrick Turner

The Atoka community is mourning the passing of William 'Pat' Patrick Turner, a dedicated educator, respected City Council member, and a truly special figure known to generations of residents. Pat, who was 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, in Durant, Oklahoma, leaving behind a legacy of service, wisdom, and an unforgettable personality.

Born on August 13, 1945, in Sayre, OK, to William Harvey and Hattie Emma Jean (McDowell) Turner, Pat graduated from Delhi High School. His passion for learning was evident early on; he attended Sayre Community College on a baseball scholarship before transferring to Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he eventually earned a double bachelor's degree, a double master's degree, and certifications as a Principal and Superintendent. He also attended and graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Pat became a beloved fixture at Atoka Public Schools, beginning his teaching career in August of 1992 and officially retiring in 2023. Even after retirement, his commitment to students remained, as he returned part-time, accumulating a total of 33 years in education.
